SO… what exactly IS a Waxathon??
- Three guys
- Easy-to-hand-out wax strips
- A public place with eager “wannabe” wax experts
- A GREAT cause
For this year’s 2015 Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge, over 33,000 cyclists raced, and many raced for their cause. Not only do they train for weeks and months in advance, they are brave enough to approach us, their friends, their family, their colleagues, and even STRANGERS to support their cause!
Three Midrand locals took their passionate plea for support to the next level. On the Friday evening before the race, Warren Hollenbach, Johan van Tonder, and Adrian van Zyl, held their first annual WAXATHON! To support their cause, Botshabelo (Babies Home | Preschool | ECD Training Program), the three amigos offered the crowd at Urban Life Church the chance to rip a strip of hot wax off their rather hairy legs for a donation to the Botshabelo Cycling Team. With smiles, and a few manly tears, they endured a slightly less than professional waxing, and raised over two thousand rand for the team!
Botshabelo reports that this is just one of many stories that made this year’s Momentum Cycle Challenge so memorable. There’s David van Lieshout who broke his leg only a couple months ago and wasn’t supposed to ride. After working through recovery, his goal was to try to ride and complete 60km. He finished the entire race! He had the support team’s smiles and some ice waiting for him! Then there’s Johan’s personal journey. On his facebook he wrote:
18 years ago I was diagnosed with an Auto Immune disease called Ulcerative Colitis. Through many ups and downs, being in so much pain and discomfort thinking it might actually be better If I don’t have to deal with this anymore!
I pushed through (with the help of friends, family and mostly God), and today I did something I never ever thought I’d do! I cycled and finished the 94.7 cycle challenge with one of my best friends.
It’s not your life, it’s just a season!
