In accepting the Biblical account of the creation of the world, some may enquire and ask what appears to be a logical question: “If God created the world, then who created God?”
The Bible makes no attempt to prove the existence of God nor that God had a beginning. In fact, the first verse in the Bible simply states: “In the beginning, God ... .”, implying along with Titus 1:2 and 2 Timothy 1:9 that God ‘was’ before time began. Scripture makes it clear in Genesis 1 that God is the creator of all things including time. The question ‘who made God’ presupposes that God suffers the same limitations as man and is subject to the same natural laws which govern the lives of every man and all creation.
Though man has been subjected into time and limited by the dimensions of this natural world, God Himself dwells outside of the dimension He created and therefore exists outside of time; 2 Peter 3:8 affirms this and we are told in Isaiah 57:15 that God inhabits eternity. We have received eternity as a promise through belief in Christ Jesus (John 3:15 and Titus 1:2) and we look forward, with hope, to this life – one, where time will no longer exist.
Because we are finite and bound by time, it is impossible for us to fully grasp the concept of eternity let alone understand something or someone that does not have a beginning or an end. Yet, God is eternal; He has no beginning or end. We need not understand this, we simply need to believe. Hebrews 11:6 says that without faith it is “impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.” (ESV).
Belief in itself does not make something true, so how, you may ask, can I be expected to blindly accept and believe something without fully understanding it? ‘Blindly’ would imply that you are unable to perceive this and yet Romans 1:20 tells us that God’s attributes, His divine nature and eternal power “have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made” (ESV).
So, if no-one created God, where did He come from? The scientific community speaks of the ‘big bang’ theory, what bearing does this have?
The laws of science show that matter is not eternal, that it is essentially ‘running down’ (the law of entropy) and if something
is making its way to an end, you must conclude that it had to have had a start. Many “scientists” believe this start occurred though the ‘big bang’ theory - which essentially is a ‘belief’ that ‘something’ came from ‘nothing’. Talk about blind faith! Who, when seeing milk spilt on the ground says: ‘Ah, self-chance - the milk just wanted to be.’ No! Instead, we logically conclude that the milk ended up on the ground because someone spilt it! Besides which, the very definition of science hinges on the fact that it must be repeatable for it to be regarded as truth.
“O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called” - 1 Timothy 6:20 , KJV.
We therefore know that the universe could not have begun on its own since it is not eternally self-existent and not self-caused, nor could it have created God. The only logical conclusion open to us is that a spiritual, self-sustaining God existed, created the universe and still exists eternally.
By its definition, an eternal Being has always existed. In Exodus 3, God reveals Himself to Moses as, “I AM THAT I AM”. The Hebrew word ‘Yahweh’ is believed to be a form of the verb hayah, which signifies “to be,” ultimately meaning “the eternal One” or “self-existing One.” This is further confirmed by Colossians 1:17 which states that God was before all things.
So, if something has always existed, and is not of a material nature, you are forced to conclude that it must be “spirit” in essence. Scriptures identifies that spirit Being as God. “God is spirit” (John 4:24) — An uncreated, eternal Spirit Being. He simply always was - He simply IS.
